For those who have missed the last thirty years, MFSL may sound unfamiliar, but those who owned a CD player in the 80′s a Pink Floyd MFSL CD is still the gold standard of sound quality. The very influential The Dark Side of The Moon was first released by the company in 1979 on LP, and in 1988 on the now legendary Ultradisc CD format. To take away the most of this release you should know some of the background of the technology, that way you’ll be able to appreciate the feat of strength MFSL achieved with their release.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab was a record company from cca. 1978 to 1999 when it collapsed due to financial issues. In 2002 it was given a new life by Music Direct and it’s been releasing ultra high quality recordings ever since. The company always prided itself in making high quality records from the original masters using the best quality sound equipment available. Their first Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of The Moon release was on high quality LP, but they quickly jumped at the aluminum CD technology as soon as it became available.
The first TDSOTM Pink Floyd Ultradisc was released in 1988 on a 24K gold coated CD. It’s considered to result in superior sound and clarity when coupled with other techniques used by MFSL, including half speed sampling. MFSL advertises all its records that they’re taken from the original master recording, which should give the clearest sound and the crispest listening experience if there is such a thing when a progressive rock band is involved.
The gold coating on the CDs gives a better reflection which results in less jitter and errors in the recording. According to MFSL this coating results in superior sound quality in all cases allowing for better reception of the returning laser beam, it’s also reacts to the writing beam better forming pits in a single step rather than letting them to slowly mold to shape. This technology gives more defined edges to pits and therefore the stray reflections can be minimized. Black back coating also serves the same purpose.
Pink Floyd’s music is worth listening to if the technology allows for all the sounds to be heard, but an MFSL CD makes it a unique experience. Their style is very ‘analogue’ in the sense that there is always some extra depth to it. All the small sounds, echoes and reverbs that build the album from note to note, and only the best of technology can come anywhere near the original performance.
